Due to the inherent adaptivity of these methods, less points are needed for the storage of smooth areas compared to non--adaptive methods. They also allow the derivation of approximate terrain models with variable level of detail. This results in a significant compression of the data as well as a highly reduced computational cost of algorithms for terrain analysis. }, year = {1999}, annote = {350} }
