Multilevel quadrature and sampling. When numerically integrating high dimensional functions, one has to deal with the curse of dimensionality, i.e. the complexity of conventional integration techniques grows exponentially with the dimension of the integrand. Monte Carlo integration can overcome this problem, albeit it merely converges with the square root of the number of samples involved. Therefore, it is desirable to contemplate more sophisticated methods, e.g. Multilevel or Multifidelity Monte Carlo, exhibiting substantially better performance under suitable prerequisites. Among others, these methods will be discussed in the seminar.

There will be an initial meeting to discuss the potential topics and research papers. Details to this meeting will be sent to those who later confirm their interest in the seminar. After that, the participants will be asked to suggest their top two or three choices, based on which we try to optimize and assign the topics to everyone.
